After 29 years of operation in Vanuatu, Fibreglass (Vanuatu) Ltd — a proudly ni-Vanuatu owned manufacturing company — has made history by registering its signature fibreglass boats under the Designs Act No. 3 of 2003. These boats are the first locally designed products to be officially approved and registered by the Vanuatu Intellectual Property Office.

Under the guidance of Iapatu Railau Sam, Senior Designs & Patents Officer at the Ministry of Trade, Tourism, Industry and Ni-Vanuatu Business, the company successfully registered the designs for its 7-metre and 5.8-metre fibreglass boats. This move, led by Managing Director Geordie Mackenzie-Reur, was driven by the need to protect unique local designs from potential Intellectual Property (IP) infringement.

Production Manager Jason Mackenzie-Reur played a key role in preparing the technical specifications required for the application. The registration process began in October 2017, with the 7-metre boat officially registered in December 2019 and the 5.8-metre boat in June 2020.

This milestone marks a major achievement for Fibreglass Vanuatu, granting the company exclusive rights to its boat designs and setting a benchmark for IP protection in the country’s manufacturing sector.

The Vanuatu Intellectual Property Office continues to encourage local businesses to take steps in safeguarding their original designs and innovations — just as Fibreglass Vanuatu has done — under Vanuatu’s IP laws.

This accomplishment aligns perfectly with the Department of Industry’s push for local manufacturers to proudly carry the “Vanuatu Made” brand, as the country celebrates over 40 years of independence.
